Car Brakes: How They Work

What Do They Do?

Rotor

The rotor, also known as the disc brake, is what attaches to the wheel of the vehicle. When the brakes are pressed, the brake pads inside the caliper squeeze the plate and slow the vehicle down.


Calipers

The calipers are wrapped around each brake disc with pistons that are used to push against the disc. More calipers will generally equal more even pressure being placed on the pads and spreading to the brake disc.

When you press the pedal, pressure builds up and brake fluid, which comes from the master cylinder through brake lines, pushes the pistons outward. To reduce the amount of effort it takes to stop, many brake systems are constructed with power assistance.
